If you want maximum impact from a single firework, a barrage — or cake — is the answer. One fuse sets off a choreographed run of effects, so you get a complete mini-display with very little setup.

Choosing a barrage

Barrages are usually described by their number of shots. More shots generally means a longer, fuller sequence, while compact cakes suit smaller gardens.

• Higher-shot barrages make a natural centrepiece or finale.
• Combine two or three smaller barrages to build a display without single-ignite fireworks.
• Always check the safety distance printed on the cake and secure it on firm, level ground.
