Choosing fireworks for Bonfire Night

A balanced back-garden display usually mixes a few different firework types so the show builds from quieter ground effects to bigger aerial finishes. Popular choices for the 5th of November include:

  • Barrages (cakes) — multi-shot fireworks that fire a sequence of effects from a single fuse, ideal as the centrepiece of a display.
  • Rockets — single high-flying effects that are useful for marking the start or finish of your show.
  • Selection boxes — a ready-made mix of smaller fireworks, handy if you would like variety without buying each item separately.
  • Fountains — ground-based effects that are well suited to families and smaller gardens.
  • Sparklers — a traditional hand-held favourite for Bonfire Night.

Planning your display

Before the night, check the space you have available and read the safety distance printed on each firework. Set fireworks up on level ground, keep spectators back at the stated distance, and have a bucket of water to hand. Our Firework Safety page explains how to store, set up and light fireworks responsibly, and follows the official Firework Code.
